SELMA: Songs of the Crossing began with a simple question: Sixty years after the historic marches, what happened to Selma after the world stopped watching?
Traveling through present-day Selma—across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, through churches, cemeteries, neighborhoods and conversations—the film became part documentary, part visual diary, and part meditation on memory, race and inheritance.
Produced for France Télévisions and directed by Jean-Jacques Cunnac, the film brings the voices of Selma’s past into conversation with the city as it exists today. For me, it also became deeply personal: an exploration of what this history means to my generation and what we pass on to the next.
Since its French broadcast, the film has traveled internationally through festivals, human-rights programs and screenings in the United States and Europe. In 2026, it returned to Alabama, where it won the Alan Hunter Award for Best Alabama Film at the Sidewalk Film Festival, along with additional recognition including a Jewel Award.
Ultimately, SELMA is not simply about what happened sixty years ago. It asks: What do we do with that history now?
